Oklahoma Hunter Safety Course 2026: Cost & Online Options
Oklahoma ties the requirement to your age today rather than to a birth year: anyone 30 or younger must be hunter education certified to hunt, unless exempt. Everyone 31 and older is exempt outright, as is anyone honorably discharged from or currently serving in the U.S. Armed Forces, and members of the National Guard. Oklahoma residents 10 and older can certify entirely online.
Oklahoma is the odd one out here: the duty hangs on how old you are today, not on when you were born. At 31 it lapses entirely — exempt whether or not you ever took the course — which is the reverse of a birth-year cutoff, where the obligation only ever spreads. Under 31 and uncertified you can still hunt on an apprentice-designated license with a certified adult beside you, within arm's length for big game and within earshot for small game. One catch for visitors: the online course is open to Oklahoma residents only, so nonresidents take the in-person class or turn up already certified. ODWC publishes no price for any of the three routes.

Uncertified hunters of 30 and under can buy an apprentice-designated license instead. For big game the accompanying hunter has to stay within arm's length, or close enough to take immediate control of the firearm or bow; for small game, within sight and able to speak to the apprentice without raising their voice. That accompanying hunter must be 18 or older, licensed and certified.

04 — Your certificate, and other states
Students under 10 may sit a class but may not take the test or receive a card, so 9-year-olds and under hunt as apprentices.
Oklahoma's hunter education program is recognised in every other state as well as in Canada and Mexico.
