New Mexico Hunter Safety Course 2026: Cost & Online Options
No one under 18 may hunt with a firearm, or apply for or buy any firearms hunting license, without a hunter education certificate from New Mexico or another state. 9+ can certify entirely online, free of charge.
New Mexico's requirement is age-based rather than birth-year-based, and unusually narrow: only hunters under 18 need a certificate to hunt with a firearm or buy a firearms license — an adult buying their first-ever New Mexico hunting license at, say, 40 needs no hunter education certificate at all. Among this project's four NMDGF-approved online vendors, the price spread runs from genuinely free (NRA Online Training) to $39.95 (ilearntohunt.com) for the identical state-recognized certificate, one of the widest free-to-paid gaps found in this project's hunter-ed research.
01 — Who needs it
No one under 18 may hunt with a firearm, or apply for or buy any firearms hunting license, without a hunter education certificate from New Mexico or another state.
Enrollment in New Mexico's Mentored-Youth (MY) Hunting Program lets an uncertified minor hunt under direct adult supervision, or buy a license, without completing the course first — a current MY number stands in for the certificate.
02 — Course options
| Course | Format | Who | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Traditional Instructor-Led Course | In person | Open to any age; 10 and under need a parent/guardian/responsible adult present | — | About 14-16 hours, plus a free homework packet required before attending — NMDGF doesn't publish a price for the in-person course itself — only that the pre-course study manual is free. |
| Online course (department-approved vendors) | Online | 9+ | — | Self-paced, roughly 3-4 hours — Certifies fully online, no field day. NMDGF approves four vendors at very different prices — see the table below, which includes a genuinely free option. |
A dash means NMDGF publishes no set price for that route — what you pay depends on the provider you pick or on the individual class.
03 — Approved online courses, side by side
| Provider | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| NRA Online Training | Free | |
| HUNTERcourse.com | $29 | |
| hunter-ed.com | $34.95 | |
| ilearntohunt.com | $39.95 |
All of these are approved by NMDGF and produce the same certificate, so the cheapest one certifies you just as well — NRA Online Training at Free.
04 — Your certificate, and other states
A hunter education certificate earned in New Mexico is recognized in all 50 states, Canadian provinces, and Mexico — and New Mexico accepts certificates from any other state or Mexico the same way.
New Mexico's Bowhunter Education is a separate, optional course that does not certify a student to hunt with a firearm or buy a hunting license on its own — NMDGF describes it as "highly recommended" for archery hunters but not mandatory.
