New Mexico Public Hunting Land 2026: WMAs & Access Rules
2 wildlife management areas tracked here, from 1,675 to 3,405 acres. A hunting license covers you on New Mexico WMA land the same as anywhere else in the state — but read the access rules below before you assume that's all you need.
01 — Wildlife management areas
| Area | County | Acres | Species |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bernardo Wildlife Management Area | Socorro | 1,675 | Waterfowl, Sandhill crane |
| La Joya Wildlife Management Area | Socorro | 3,405 | Waterfowl, Dove, Sandhill crane |
Bernardo and La Joya are both pieces of the state-run Ladd S. Gordon Waterfowl Complex along the middle Rio Grande, purchased decades ago specifically to winter waterfowl and sandhill cranes on managed wetland and grain fields — Bernardo doubles as a Middle Rio Grande Valley crane check-station area, while La Joya (roughly 20 miles north of Socorro, with seven managed ponds across three hunt units) adds dove hunting to the mix. This list is a starting point, not NMDGF's full inventory of state wildlife management areas.
02 — Access rules beyond your hunting license
NMDGF's state Wildlife Management Areas along the middle Rio Grande — Bernardo, La Joya, Casa Colorada, and Belen, together the Ladd S. Gordon Waterfowl Complex — are built specifically around wintering waterfowl and sandhill cranes, distinct from the GMU-based draw system that governs New Mexico's big game. A standard hunting or game-hunting license covers general hunting on these areas; special components layer on top for specific hunts — the Light Goose Conservation Order needs its own free permit, and youth waterfowl days and Middle Rio Grande Valley crane hunts each carry their own registration and check-station requirements.
