Iowa Hunter Safety Course 2026: Cost & Online Options
Anyone born after January 1, 1972 must be certified in hunter education before they can buy an Iowa hunting license. Iowa accepts no substitutes for the course itself — military and law enforcement training do not count. 18 and older can certify entirely online, from $39.95.
Iowa splits cleanly at 18. From there you can certify entirely online and print the certificate the same day; between 11 and 17 you take the online course and then a field day. The classroom course is free at any age and runs at least ten hours. Two things catch people out: of the three approved online providers, Recademics is open to Iowa residents only, and Iowa accepts no substitute for the course itself, so military or law enforcement training will not stand in — though a certificate from another state will.
01 — Who needs it
Anyone born after January 1, 1972 must be certified in hunter education before they can buy an Iowa hunting license. Iowa accepts no substitutes for the course itself — military and law enforcement training do not count.
Children under 12 may hunt deer or turkey without certification as long as a licensed adult is present.
02 — Course options
| Course | Format | Who | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| In-person classroom course | In person | 11 and older | Free | At least 10 hours — Free, unless a particular class charges for lunch or room rental. Book through the Go Outdoors Iowa event calendar. |
| Adult online-only course | Online | 18 and older | — | At your own pace — Certifies you outright — pass the final exam at 75% or better and print the permanent certificate the same day, with no field day. Iowa recommends this route mainly for people who already have hunting or firearms experience. |
| Online course plus field day | Online + field day | 11 to 17 | — | Online at your own pace, then one in-person field day — The route for under-18s. The online course alone does not certify them; the field day is what completes it. |
| Dual hunter education and handgun safety course | Online | 21 and older, Iowa residents | — | At your own pace — Covers both certifications in one course, run through Concealedcarry-ed.com. Iowa DNR publishes no price for it. |
A dash means Iowa DNR publishes no set price for that route — what you pay depends on the provider you pick or on the individual class.
03 — Approved online courses, side by side
| Provider | Cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| hunter-ed.com | $39.95 | No residency restriction. |
| Recademics | $39.99 | Iowa residents only. |
| ilearntohunt.com | $49.95 | No residency restriction. |
All three are named as approved by Iowa DNR, which publishes no fees — these prices come from the providers themselves. Watch the residency line rather than the price: Recademics takes Iowa residents only, so a visiting adult chooses between hunter-ed.com at $39.95 and ilearntohunt.com at $49.95.
04 — Your certificate, and other states
You can enroll from age 11. Certify at 11 and the certificate takes effect on your 12th birthday.
Iowa recognises hunter education certificates issued by another state and by some foreign nations.
