Odessa sits at the confluence of the Iowa and Mississippi Rivers near Wapello, roughly half timber, a quarter lake and a quarter marsh — decades of legendary waterfowl hunting here ran through a controlled-draw program that Iowa DNR finally retired after the 2009 season once demand no longer justified it, so it now runs under ordinary statewide WMA rules like everywhere else. Sedan Bottoms, in the Chariton River bottomland of Appanoose County near Centerville, is younger and still growing — an 852-acre addition in 2016 pushed it past 5,000 acres of prairie, oak savanna, floodplain and hardwood that covers turkey, deer, waterfowl and pheasant in one property. This list is a starting point, not Iowa DNR's full inventory of more than 350 wildlife management areas statewide.
02 — Access rules beyond your hunting license
Iowa is the simplest access system of any state in this silo so far: no separate WMA user permit at all, just a standard Iowa hunting license and the Wildlife Habitat Fee for hunters 16-64. The DNR dropped even the old motor-vehicle-use permit for game management areas. The one access rule that does bite hunters is federal, not state — the Port Louisa National Wildlife Refuge portion of the Odessa Complex is closed to all hunting and closed to public entry entirely from September 15 to January 1, so know exactly which boundary you're standing on before duck season opens.
