03 — Shooting hours

Legal light on opening day (July 11, 2026) 05:18 — 20:47

Rule: One-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset — California Code of Regulations Title 14 § 352 sets this for big game 'including but not limited to deer, antelope, elk, and bear'. CDFW notes the times run off sunrise/sunset AT THE HUNTER'S LOCATION, so published times from elsewhere in the state do not apply.. Sunrise/sunset shift daily — the times above are computed for opening day; use your local California sun times for any other date.

04 — License

A California hunting license and deer permit are required. Costs, age rules and where to buy are on our license page below.

05 — Scouting gear

Scouting a property before California's opener usually means glassing terrain and running a trail camera through the summer and early fall.

What time can you start shooting deer in California?

On opening day (July 11, 2026) legal light runs 05:18 to 20:47. The rule is: One-half hour before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset — California Code of Regulations Title 14 § 352 sets this for big game 'including but not limited to deer, antelope, elk, and bear'. CDFW notes the times run off sunrise/sunset AT THE HUNTER'S LOCATION, so published times from elsewhere in the state do not apply. Sunrise and sunset shift daily, so work the offset against your local California sun times for any other date.

Can I hunt deer on my own land in California without a license?

No — California requires a hunting license regardless of land ownership. The one landowner-specific carve-out is a narrow depredation-permit process for wild pigs causing damage, which is not a general hunting license.

Publisher's note. IMPORTANT: California has NO white-tailed deer season. These are mule deer, Columbian black-tailed deer, and California mule deer. Dates below are from the 'Approved 2026 Deer Seasons by Zone' (CDFW). The zone table gaps (no D-1/D-2/D-18, no X-11) are in the source, not omissions. Zone tag validity: B tags valid in any B zone; C tags valid in any C zone (general season only); D3-5 tags interchangeable within D-3/D-4/D-5; D-11/D-13/D-15 tags cross-valid. X zones are drawn (lottery). Archery-only hunts A-1 (C zones) and A-3 to A-20 (X zones) have calendar dates not printed in the zone table — the booklet gives only rule-based descriptions (e.g. 'third Saturday in August + 23 consecutive days'); those rows are omitted rather than calculated. CWD Management Zone: X-9b, X-9c, D-7 plus additional hunt G-3 require mandatory CWD sample submission within 10 days of harvest. Additional G-/J-series hunts (apprentice, junior, antlerless) not captured.
