Sauvie Island, just 20 minutes from downtown Portland, packs wintering waterfowl habitat and over 250 other species onto 11,543 acres — the most accessible major wildlife area in the state, which is exactly why its reservation-hunt system exists to spread out the pressure. Summer Lake, out in Lake County's high desert, is nearly 19,000 acres of a different world entirely: a remote basin marsh established back in 1944 specifically for waterfowl habitat and public hunting, where the wildlife-viewing tour route closes for the entire hunting season (early October through late January) rather than staying open around hunters. This list is a starting point, not ODFW's full inventory of managed wildlife areas statewide.
02 — Access rules beyond your hunting license
A free annual parking permit comes bundled with any Oregon annual hunting license, combination license or Sports Pac — no extra cost for hunters, but non-hunting visitors and anyone without one of those licenses needs to buy the permit separately to park at Sauvie Island, Summer Lake or ODFW's other managed wildlife areas. Reservation hunts at the more popular areas add their own $4 application fee per hunt period on top of the parking permit.
