Michigan Public Hunting Land 2026: WMAs & Access Rules

2 wildlife management areas tracked here, from 4,040 to 50,000 acres. A hunting license covers you on Michigan WMA land the same as anywhere else in the state — but read the access rules below before you assume that's all you need.

01 — Wildlife management areas

AreaCountyAcresSpecies
Allegan State Game Area Allegan 50,000 Deer, Turkey, Waterfowl, Pheasant, Small game
Pointe Mouillee State Game Area Monroe, Wayne 4,040 Waterfowl

Allegan is Michigan's largest state game area at 50,000 acres, a forest-and-wetland block west of the city of Allegan that alone would headline a smaller state's public-land inventory — deer, turkey, waterfowl and pheasant all in solid numbers, with almost 30 miles of trail through the Swan Creek section for anyone scouting on foot first. Pointe Mouillee is the opposite kind of property: a 4,040-acre freshwater marsh restoration on Lake Erie's western shore, among the largest of its kind in the world and one of the most respected waterfowl destinations in the state, run as a managed hunt rather than open ground. This list is a starting point, not Michigan DNR's full inventory of state game and wildlife areas.

02 — Access rules beyond your hunting license

A standard Michigan hunting license covers full access to most state game areas, Allegan included, with no extra permit layered on top. Pointe Mouillee is one of Michigan's seven 'Wetland Wonders' — premier managed waterfowl marshes that run differently: access to the best hunting zones goes through free daily drawings held on site during waterfowl season, not open walk-in access, with reserved hunts on the opening weekend.
