North Carolina Hunter Safety Course 2026: Cost & Online Options
No birth-year cutoff. North Carolina requires hunter education of every first-time hunting license buyer, and separately of anyone under 16 who wants to hunt without an adult present. Anyone can certify entirely online, free of charge.
North Carolina is one of the cheapest states here for online certification, and the reason is competition rather than a state subsidy: NCWRC approves four providers for the identical fully-online, no-field-day course, and they range from free (NRA) to $39.95 (hunter-ed.com) for the same outcome — hunteredcourse.com at $19.95 undercuts the field further. The classroom route is free at any age, with no minimum despite the sixth-grade reading level of the material. New hunters who would rather defer the whole decision can hunt for up to three license years on the free Hunting Heritage Apprentice Permit instead, under a certified mentor.

The free Hunting Heritage Apprentice Permit lets a new hunter of any age hunt for up to three license years under a licensed, hunter-education-certified mentor before ever taking the course.

NCWRC names all four and, unusually, none of them requires a field day — the spread here is pure price competition for an identical outcome, from free through the NRA to $39.95 through hunter-ed.com.
04 — Your certificate, and other states
North Carolina's certificate is accepted in every other US state and Canadian province, and NCWRC accepts certification completed anywhere in North America in return.
North Carolina does not require bowhunter education to hunt with a bow generally. It is required separately for membership in the North Carolina Bowhunters Association's Bowhunter Certification & Referral Service, which some private land and season access depends on — the standard hunter safety course plus IBEP or NCWRC's Today's Bowhunter course.
