New York Hunter Safety Course 2026: Cost & Online Options
No birth-year cutoff. New York requires a Hunter Education Certificate of every first-time hunter 12 or older before a license can be issued. New York residents 11 and older can certify entirely online, from $29.99.
New York is the only state in this silo where bowhunter education is a genuine second requirement rather than an optional extra — deer and bear archery hunters need both certificates, not just the general one. The core requirement itself has no birth-year cutoff at all: it catches every first-time hunter 12 or older, full stop, unless they can show they held a license before. Online certification is free of any field day for both the standard and the bowhunter course, but New York locks both to residents — a visiting first-time hunter has to take the free in-person route, 7 hours of class on top of 3 hours of homework, to get certified here at all.

Anyone who can show a previous hunting license, or an affidavit of having held one, satisfies the requirement without the course.

New York accepts hunter education certification completed in any other state toward a New York hunting license.
Required on top of the standard Hunter Education Certificate, but only for first-time archery hunters going after deer or bear specifically — bowhunting other species doesn't trigger it.
