New Jersey Hunter Safety Course 2026: Cost & Online Options
New Jersey residents age 10 or older who haven't completed Hunter Education, or can't produce documentation that they did, must pass the free online course and attend a live-fire range session for each discipline — Firearm and/or Bow — matching the license they want.
New Jersey's Hunter Education program is entirely free, funded through the federal Pittman-Robertson excise tax on hunting and shooting equipment rather than course fees — unlike every other state in this silo, there's no paid third-party vendor to compare prices against. The requirement isn't birth-year-based; it applies to anyone who hasn't completed the course or can no longer document that they have, matching the same first-time-buyer logic as New Jersey's licensing system. The two "disciplines," Firearm and Bow, mirror the state's split Firearm/Bow & Arrow license structure directly — a hunter only needs to clear the live-fire session for the weapon type they actually plan to license, not both. Youth ages 10-15 who complete the program qualify for a free Youth License; hunters 16 and older become eligible to buy whichever license(s) match the discipline(s) on their Hunter Education card.

New Jersey residents age 10 or older who haven't completed Hunter Education, or can't produce documentation that they did, must pass the free online course and attend a live-fire range session for each discipline — Firearm and/or Bow — matching the license they want.
An Apprentice License is available (restrictions apply) for hunters without hunter-ed proof or a prior license — minimum age 14 to hunt with bow equipment, 18 with a firearm.

04 — Your certificate, and other states
The printed "Home Study Voucher" from passing the online exam doesn't expire, and is what you bring to the live-fire session(s) whenever you schedule them.
New Jersey doesn't run its own hunter education course for nonresidents at all — their entire path is to pass hunter education in their home state, obtain a New Jersey Conservation ID (CID) number, and provide nonresident hunting license documentation. There's no separate NJ-specific exam for a nonresident to pass.
New Jersey doesn't run a separate bowhunter education course — the same online Hunter Education program covers both disciplines. A hunter who wants the Bow & Arrow License has to register for and pass the Bow-specific live-fire session on top of the shared online exam, which includes demonstrating 3 of 5 arrows into a target's vital zone at 20 yards with their own bow.
