Kentucky Hunter Safety Course 2026: Cost & Online Options
Anyone born on or after January 1, 1975 must complete a hunter education course before hunting in Kentucky, and carry the card — paper or on a phone — in the field. Serving members, veterans and retirees of the U.S. Armed Forces, and certified Kentucky peace officers can certify entirely online, free of charge.
Kentucky is one of the cheaper states to get certified in, and the reason is that both ends of the range are free: the in-person course costs nothing and hands you the certificate the same day, firearms and ammunition included, while the NRA online course costs nothing either. The catch with going online is the range day — the knowledge portion on its own certifies nobody, so the online route is always two parts. The single exception is written into the regulation: serving and former military and certified Kentucky peace officers can send in proof of status and skip the live fire entirely.
01 — Who needs it
Anyone born on or after January 1, 1975 must complete a hunter education course before hunting in Kentucky, and carry the card — paper or on a phone — in the field.
Three ways out. Children under 12 are exempt outright and only need certifying from their 12th birthday, though they may sit the test from age 9 — a three-year window KDFWR points out on purpose. Anyone new to hunting can take the free one-time Temporary Hunter Education Exemption Permit: valid one year, open to residents and nonresidents alike, and it requires you to hunt with a licensed adult who already meets the requirement. It cannot be renewed, so once it lapses the course is unavoidable. Hunting on your own land, or under one of Kentucky's other license-exempt categories, also lifts the requirement — KDFWR still recommends the course.

KDFWR names all five and, unusually, publishes their prices itself — so these figures come from the agency rather than from the sellers. The spread is the whole point: the same certificate costs nothing through the NRA portal and $49.95 through ilearntohunt. Whichever you pick, the range day still stands, unless you qualify for the live-fire exemption.
04 — Your certificate, and other states
You can sit the test from age 9 but only need the certificate from 12, so there is a three-year run-up. Lost the card? Reprint it free through the Hunter Education card lookup at fw.ky.gov.
Kentucky accepts hunter education certification from all 49 other states, and the proof has to be on you in the field. It does not work the other way round for the temporary exemption permit: that one is valid in Kentucky only, and not on Blue Grass Army Depot or Fort Campbell.
