Illinois Hunter Safety Course 2026: Cost & Online Options
Anyone born on or after January 1, 1980 needs a hunter safety certificate before buying an Illinois hunting license — or proof of having held an Illinois hunting license in an earlier year. 18 and older can certify entirely online, from $29.
Illinois is unusually good value for adults: from 18 you can certify start to finish online for as little as $29, with no field day. Under 18s take the hybrid route, where the field day is free and only the online portion costs anything.
01 — Who needs it
Anyone born on or after January 1, 1980 needs a hunter safety certificate before buying an Illinois hunting license — or proof of having held an Illinois hunting license in an earlier year.
The Youth Hunting License and the Apprentice Hunting License are the exemptions from that rule.

04 — Your certificate, and other states
Illinois hunter safety certificates are valid for life, and Conservation Police accept them displayed electronically.
Illinois recognises certificates from other states, Canadian provinces and other jurisdictions that meet the IHEA-USA basic hunter education curriculum standard.
Illinois does not require bowhunter education. Bow and crossbow hunters still need the ordinary hunter safety certificate.
