California Hunter Safety Course 2026: Cost & Online Options

California asks for hunter education from anyone who has never held a California hunting license, holds no hunter education certificate, and has no hunting license from another state or province issued within the past two years. There is no birth-year cutoff.

The thing to know before you start: California retired the online-only course, so no one certifies over the internet here any more. Both remaining routes end in a room with an instructor — either the full traditional class, or an online course followed by a compulsory 4-hour follow-up. Budget for the follow-up day from the outset, and note that the $34.95 or $49.95 you pay a provider buys the online half only.

01 — Who needs it

California asks for hunter education from anyone who has never held a California hunting license, holds no hunter education certificate, and has no hunting license from another state or province issued within the past two years. There is no birth-year cutoff.

A hunting license from another state or province issued in the last two years satisfies the requirement on its own.

02 — Course options

CourseFormatWhoCostNotes
Traditional hunter education course In person No minimum age At least 10 hours of classroom, homework and field instruction — Covers firearms safety, ethics, wildlife management, archery, black powder, wildlife identification, game care, first aid and survival. CDFW instructors may not charge for their time, but a class may charge for training materials, so the price varies by class rather than being set by the state.
Online course plus follow-up class Online + field day No minimum age Online course at your own pace, then a mandatory 4-hour follow-up class — The online course alone does not earn a certificate. You print the completion voucher and bring it to the follow-up class, and only then are you certified. Cost is whatever the online provider charges plus any materials fee at the follow-up.

A dash means CDFW publishes no set price for that route — what you pay depends on the provider you pick or on the individual class.

03 — Approved online courses, side by side

ProviderCostNotes
hunter-ed.com $34.95 Also offered in Spanish.
ilearntohunt.com $49.95 No minimum age for the online portion.

Both providers are approved by CDFW, and neither certifies you on its own — each one issues a voucher for the compulsory 4-hour follow-up class, so the cheaper one gets you to the same place. These two prices come from the providers themselves: CDFW publishes no course fees.

04 — Your certificate, and other states

CDFW sets no minimum age for the course, though it suggests asking an instructor whether a young child is ready for it.

California accepts proof of hunter education issued by any state or province — take the certificate to a license vendor or a CDFW office.

Bowhunter education does not satisfy the California hunter education requirement. It works the other way round, though: the California bowhunter certificate satisfies bowhunter requirements in other states.
